Knoxville, Tenn. – University of Tennessee diver Phillip Jones has been named the Southeastern Conference swimming and diving Athlete of the Week for the week of Jan. 14.  Jones garnered the award after a strong performance at the 2003 Speedo American Cup, held Jan. 7-12 in Bloomington, Ind.  Jones took the crown on the three-meter springboard and placed-second on the synchronized three-meter event.
Jones’ score of 632.07 that earned him first place on the three-meter is a personal best and second best all time in UT history. The field he beat contained three NCAA champions and three Olympians. He also earned a spot for the upcoming U.S. Olympic Trials.
Jones, a sophomore from Lexington, Ky.., earned All-America honors on the one-meter and three-meter boards last season. He was a member of the U.S National Team and finished second at the 2002 Russian Nationals. Jones also captured his first SEC crown on the three-meter at last year’s championships.  He then went on to finish third on both the one-meter and three-meter at the NCAA Championships.  Jones was named the 2002 SEC Freshman Diver of the Year.
Jones and his teammates will be back in action Jan. 25, against SEC foe Georgia at the UT Student Aquatic Center.
