Girls RockThe Girls Rock! Fundraiser at the Candoro Arts and Heritage Center June 5 raised more than $1,000 for a girls rock camp to be held this summer in Knoxville.

The benefit was hosted by KnowHow Knoxville, a new group that intends to facilitate leadership, development, and civic engagement of young people in Knoxville through the use of arts, culture, and media analysis.

Despite the rain, over 100 people were in attendance for the festivities. The money generated from the event will go to purchasing instruments for the camp and supplementing the cost of tuition for the camp.

“We don’t want to turn anyone away based on income,” Elizabeth Wright,  co-founder of KnowHow, said. “The tuition for the camp is totally negotiable and we will use some of the funds to subsidize that.”

The event featured a concert by The Pinklets, an all-girl rock band comprised of girls aged 9, 11, and 14. There was a rock and roll face painting station as well. Attendees were also able to design their own t-shirts and create their own album art.

“We had a lot of great activities that the kids really enjoyed,” Wright said.

Write said the event generated a lot of interest in the functions of KnowHow. She said they have received feedback from female musicians in the community willing to volunteer their time to teach young girls how to play music.

“A lot of people out there seem to be really excited about what we’re doing,” Wright said.

KnowHow Knoxville is completely operated by volunteers to date. Their workshops have been paid for solely by individuals involved in the group. Wright said they will be looking for grants and support in the near future.

“It is really hard for a new organization just getting off the ground to get started so every bit of support from the fundraiser was hugely important and we appreciate the community support for that,” Wright said.

KnowHow Knoxville is planning a documentary camp for kids. The original start for the camp has been delayed. The group will announce enrollment dates on their Facebook page.
