The Holiday season is upon us, and while many will be spending their time indoors shopping or wrapping presents, IJAMS Nature Center will be offering several outdoor events aimed at showcasing the nature and wildlife unique to East Tennessee.
First on the calendar, the Kid’s Holiday Craft Day takes place at the Nature Center this Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. Participating children will be given the opportunity to make ornaments and crafts strictly from natural materials with a focus on materials found only in nature.
That same day beginning at 9 a.m., IJAMS will offer a beginner birding program, which will offer those new to the world of bird watching an introductory course in locating and enjoying the local bird population. Focusing on the winter ducks that remain in Knoxville during the colder seasons, the free event will teach participants how to use binoculars and field guides
“It’s a good place to start, because they don’t move very fast,” Jennifer Roder, Education Director for IJAMS Nature Center said.
Lastly, The Nature Center will hold its 5th annual Holiday Market the following Sunday, Dec. 10 from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. The market will put a spotlight on artisans, with a variety of bath and body products, soaps, wood metal crafts, jewelry and more.
“One of the things we think is really important is for people to be able to appreciate nature in all its different forms,” Roder said of the slate of IJAMS winter events. “We do events all the way through the winter, because it’s a great chance for people to appreciate some of the things they don’t see in the summer or the spring … There’s really exciting things happening outdoors even in the colder months.”
